Kanimozhi, the DMK MP & Karunanidhi’s descendant, represented by expert lawyer Ram Jethmalani, had sought bail in from the 2G scam association, on the entreaty that she was a quiet associate of Kalaignar TV, and also a mother who desired special concern. But even if Kanimozhi was not the effective owner, her mother undoubtedly was. The CBI didn’t charge-sheet the mainstream owner of Kalaignar TV, Dayalu Ammal (Kanimozhi’s mother) on the hypothesis that she had no inkling about the operation of the company, in view of the fact that she was not a industry person.
The 43-year-old daughter of Karunanidhi’s 2nd wife Rajathi, Kanimozhi was shaken on hearing that her bail supplication was rejected by Special CBI judge OP Saini. Her confidence on our law system broke as she saw the judge declaring orders to make way for her in the Tihar Jail.
The issue dates back to 2008 when 9 telecom companies were subjected to scant airwaves, a national resource, and licenses for 2G mobile phone services at Rs.1,658 crore (less that $350 million) for a pan-India operation. As many as 122 circle-wise licenses were given out.
Alongside Kanimozhi, Saini shelved the bail petition of Sharad Kumar too, the MDof Kalaignar TV, who is co-accused in the bribery charge of taking 200 Crore from DB Realty. He has also been taken into detention.
The chivalry of being a women, repetedly used by Jethmalani to save Kanimozhi fell flat in the 144 page order passed by the court because of the “magnitude of the crime, nature and enormity of the allegations” as Justice OP Saini was heard quoting. Kanimozhi will now face the trial while in custody in the jail as a suspect reserves the right to appeal again in India’s judicial system.
While all the others are in jail, Morani has so far abstained from appearing in court on medical grounds. The special CBI court will hear the bail pleas of Asif Balwa and Rajiv Agarwal on May 21 while Shahid Balwa’s bail plea will be heard on May 24.
