3 Idiots is a comedy flick released in 2009 starring Amir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R.Madhvan and Sherman Joshi. The other cast members include Boman Irani, Mona Singh,Omi Vaidya and Javed Jaffery. The movie is directed by Raj Kumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The movie is believed to be inspired from the book the Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat.  It is the highest grossing Bollywood film of all time in India, crossing the 1billion rupees mark within 10 days of its release.  The movie in its taciturnity revolves around the education system in India and how it affects the students and at times can pose a risk to their lives. It also highlights the importance of taking things by choice rather than by chance.

The complete storyline is drawn around three friends Amir (Rancho), Madhvan (Farhan) and Sherman (Raju) who are roommates in an engineering college. Farhan belongs to a middle class family whose parents have worked hard to make him study and have provided best possible comforts to him. His father wants him to pursue engineering but he’s a photographer by choice. Raju belongs to a poor family with an ailing father and a marriageable sister. All these pressures increase the pressure on him which decreases his effectiveness in college. On the other hand, Rancho (actually Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanacad) is highly motivated person living in his own world. He has his own set of principles and ideologies in life that bug Farhan and Raju especially Raju because he wants to study and Rancho involves them in lots of fun and pranks that causes trouble from Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Virus, the Dean of the college) over and again. Rancho doesn’t believe in the present way of teaching and challenges the genuineness of it. This annoys Virus. Meanwhile Rancho falls in love with Virus’ daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor). In between Rancho helps Raju in recovering from injuries when he jumps off from the dean’s room as he is asked to write a suspension letter for Rancho. Rancho also motivates Farhan to talk to his parents about his passion for photography. He brings a change in their thoughts and makes their life far better. But strangely, on the day of convocation he (Rancho) leaves everyone without bidding an adieu.  It has been ten years since they left college. No one knows any whereabouts of him (Rancho) but Farhan and Raju decide to search for him and they happen to meet Phunsuk Wangdu who takes them to Rancho. But who is Phunsuk Wangdu? You got to see the movie to know that.

There are certain good things about the movie that have made it appear as being  very spontaneous. Firstly the acting is very candid. At no point you feel that they are not college goers and the part being played by them doesn’t suit them. Then the direction is amazingly superb with a delivery scene of Virus’ elder daughter Mona by engineering students grabbing all the praise. There has not been extrapolation of issues and concerns. Everything is in apt amount. Unlike in other Bollywood movies romance is quite subdued; it is just a part of movie and not the movie as a whole.

The music and songs are very soothing and situational. The song “Zoobi Doobi” featuring Amir and Kareena became a superhit. The other number “Jaane Nahi Denge tujhe” is really touching. The phrase “All Izz Well” also became very famous. After the release of the movie, children were found uttering these words quite often.

With so well written a story and direction, the movie in its own unique way gives a strong message of following your passion and dreams and advises not to become a victim of the system. Everyone has potential of his/her own and should try its best to utilize that. Most importantly one should be oneself always.
