Indian cinema gives viewers a story about inflation, but with a comic twist
Competing with Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, director Anshul Sharma gives the Indian audience Saare Jahan Se Mehnga. This film is a satire on the never-ending inflation in the country. The story revolves around a family of four and how the price rise has an impact on all the members.
The cast consists of faces that aren’t regulars on the silver screen. Sanjay Mishra will play Puttanpal and he will reflect the common man. Vishwa Mohan Badola will play Nagpal and he will target the senior citizens who are affected by inflation. Pragati Pandey, who will play Noori, will show the impact on women. Newcomer Ranjan Chabbra will play Gopal, who will represent the youth of the country.
The film is a directorial debut. Anshul Sharma was the associate director in films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Phas Gaye Re Obama. The new perception of this debutant will give the audience new faces and theatre personalities.
But this film is not India’s first satirical film.
In 2012, OMG- Oh My God touched the topic of the corruption and scams surrounding the practice of the Hindu religion in the country. The story was about a man whose shop got destroyed in an earthquake, an act of God. Demanding justice, he takes famous, religious priests to court. It is revealed that these priests take advantage of the people’s fear of God. This film was an eye-opener for the ones who blindly sacrifice their hard earned money over a false belief system.
In the year 2010, many satirical movies were releases on different sectors of society. Peepli Live was a film that focused on the topic about ‘farmer suicides’ and the sensationalizing of the media channels. Khatta Meetha was a satire about a road constructor and how his dream suffers due to financial and political matters. Tere Bin Laden was a take on Osama Bin Laden and America’s war against terror.
Although the year 2010 gave us many satires, parallel cinema during the 80’s gave us two satires that touched some of the most controversial topics. Mandi was a film about the mix of politics and prostitution. It revolved around the impact of politics on the women of a brothel in the heart of a town.
In the same year as Mandi, there was a dark comedy film called Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. This dark satire covered every corrupt aspect of society- the Indian politics, the constructors, the bureaucracy, and the media. A whirlwind of events ropes in two photographers who are trying to unveil the murder of a corrupt Municipal Commissioner and the people involved in it.
These films have one thing in common, the involvement of politics and the media. The ethics and morals of the two have always been in question. The common man has always asked for transparency and through these films the lives of the middle class have been portrayed. The negative impact on those who are bound by wither finances or higher powers have been represented by films that cover serious issues but not without humor.
The Indian audience is made up of all the groups of society- the rich, the middle class, and the poor. Films that are about true incidents or situations are the kind that one could relate to the most. When it comes to satires and dark comedies, the film is mostly targeted at either the youth or the common man; the most vulnerable and influential.
These stories are to make you laugh and think at the same time. Awareness is essential to combat any social or political issues that are present in the current scenario.
What better than a film?
Infotainment- a beautiful blend of information and entertainment- is the key to reach the “every day” people. A medium to disguise the true message in comic situations and present it out in the open can give people an opportunity to form new opinions.
Will Saare Jahan Se Mehnga cover the true effect of inflation and the involvement of politics?
Or will it simply focus on the lives of the middle class and their suffering?
In both the cases, we look forward to a new angle to one of the trickiest issues of the county.
