The AirPod is built and designed by Motor Development International (MDI). MDI is a company which was established by Guy NEGRE in 1991 keeping in mind the protection of the planet and for the development of zero pollution engines. Promotion and development of ecological energies, production of non-pollutant vehicle and system is the aim of the company.
AirPod is the outcome of such thinking. MDI has invented a compressed air technology for cars. Nowadays use of crude oil has increased and it is predicted that it will dry up very soon. MDI has proved that air can be used as alternative form of energy to fuel!
MDI put the world in excitement when it introduced the AIRPod car which can run on compressed air. This car was introduced at the Geneva Auto Show 2009. This car is very small in size and looks like a car from some science-fiction movie. Small size makes it easy to park. Parking is also a big problem nowadays. It has 4 seats (3 adults and 1 child) and has luggage space also. As said earlier this car uses compressed air instead of petrol which makes us forget huge expenditure on petrol. Also everyone can be able to enjoy the pollution free air. It is a zero-emission vehicle so it is getting a lot of attention. The air is compressed with the help of MDI’s compressed air system that uses electricity. The expansion of this air then used to drive pistons of this car to move it. Instead of a steering wheel, joystick is given to drive this car; so the drivers will have to spend some more time and familiarize themselves with the controlling system. The maximum speed of the car is 40 miles per hour but the top speed of the future models will be more than this. It can travel up to 140 miles on a single 46-gallon tank of air. Refilling AirPod is easy and quick. Aircar filling stations will be established on road or one can use inexpensive air compressors at home. The running costs amount to only 1 per 200km (a penny per mile) according to MDI. The AIRPod measures 81.5 inches long, 63 inches wide and 68.5 inches tall. It weighs 485 pounds.
There are some disadvantages of the air car like compressors are needed, there will be losses in the conversion from electricity to compressed air; but the refilling of the tank is easier than charging the battery and we can get rid of environmental problems associated with the battery production and dumping.
Indian carmaker Tata Motors, Ratan Tata, CEO of Tata Motors and the Tata Group got the license of MDI’s air-power technology. Zero Pollution Motors has purchased the rights for the U.S. market and expecting to manufacture 8,000 vehicles a year in the United States. Licensing arrangements for other countries are currently in progress. In Europe, commercial sales of the AIRPod are scheduled to begin in France by the end of this year.
