Anirudh Kedia Writes a Letter to the Prime Minister

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

I’d like to comment on the education system in India in schools. I am a student in class 10 in ICSE board. Frankly, I am fed up.

All the education system at school level is about marks. No one talks about new learning and applications of what we learn. The only thing that matters is the marks you score in your exam. This system pressurises the students to the extent that they cannot sustain it. Schools are centres of education not pressure cookers.

What I would like to suggest is alternate forms of assessment like the grading system CBSE board has adopted (which still can be refined). Putting the focus on the wisdom of the student rather than his knowledge will be a better assessment of the child. “Knowledge is knowing that tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad”. If the wisdom of the child is assessed then the child will have better practical understanding of things which is of greater value to the nation as a whole.

This system makes a child hate school; which in retrospect is the best time in his life. This shouldn’t be happening, don’t you think? All I’m saying is make the system more learning centric than it being focussing only on the mark system. This’ll result in children going happily to school and therefore with an open mind which is always good for learning.

Yours sincerely,

Anirudh Kedia

Student from class 10
