Bang Bang, Khoobsurat, And Other Bollywood Releases

The first half of the year saw the release of big budget films like Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Ek Villian, and Humshakals, all of which tuned out to be huge disappointments despite their promising trailers. Recently,a number of intriguing Bollywood movie trailers for the year 2014 have managed to catch the eye of the public and the anticipation for the release of these movies is only growing.

Bollywood has always played an important role since its one of the biggest sources of entertainment we have. The magic of Bollywood has not only captivated India, but has managed to mesmerize people in almost all parts of the globe.

The coming months will see the release of few of the most anticipated films. The most promising ones being:

Finding Fanny

A romantic comedy starring Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor in the lead roles, the movie is set in the scenic landscape of and around Goa. Director Homi Adajania’s fourth film after Everybody Says I’m Fine, Being Cyrus and Cocktail, Finding Fanny looks like a hilarious journey that promises unforgettable performances by seasoned actors Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah and Dimple Kapadia. This is probably one of the most awaited films of the year.

Mary Kom

A Sports biography on the life of boxing champion, Mary Kom played by Priyanka Chopra,. it is Chopra’s most challenging performance yet. While director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has come into enormous criticism for his casting choice of an A-list Bollywood actor for the role of a Manipuri woman, the film is being awaited with high expectations.

Mary Kom is the first attempt of its kind for both Bhansali and Chopra. While Bhansali is well received by his audience for period films that are rich with local flavor and culture driven, Chopra is loved for her ability to take up challenging roles like the ones in Fashion, Aitraaz, and Barfi. The coming together of Bhansali and Priyanka, to bring to the silver screen the life of Mary Kom, surely makes this a must-watch film.

An adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Shahid Kapoor will be seen in the lead role. The film is set in political Kashmir amalgamated with the story of Hamlet.  After Maqbool and Omkara, Haider is third on the list of Vishal Bhardwaj’s films that adapts Shakespeare’s theatre into a Bollywood commercial film. While the previous two films gave out Bhardwaj’s best, Haider only seems better.

After Kaminey, Shahid Kapoor has not been able to sway the audience too much with his roles. However, gathering from the trailer, Haider is surely going to be a game-changer for Shahid in the film industry. Apart from Shahid, Kay Kay Menon and Tabu also add to the brilliance of Haider.

Under the direction of Pradeep Sarkar, Rani Mukherjee will be seen playing yet another eccentric character. After the brilliant performance in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, No One Killed Jessica and Black, Rani is making her comeback after marriage with Mardaani and from the looks of it, she is sure to change the way we as commoners, look at social issues like women trafficking and prostitution.

The trailer gives indicates that the film is going to be an unconventional female-centric drama with Rani playing the lead as a police inspector. The fact that Sarkar has taken up the challenging task of reporting a social issue of trafficking through a commercial drama is worthy of applaud, as it most likely is going to hit the audience harder. And another surprise is the characterization of comic and lovable Purab Kohli. This one is going to be a movie worth watching.

While the trailers of these four films appear captivating with their story line and star cast, there are other films which are likely to sway the audience though they seem to possess the typical Bollywood narrative.

Bang Bang

The Katrina Kaif and Hritik Roshan starrer Bang Bang is an action-comedy Bollywood masala mix. While the film’s poster which portrays the steamy chemistry between Hritik and Katrina gained the attention of many, the official trailer of the film highlights only the action of the film. The cinematography, apart from the star-cast, will certainly prove to be the strength of the film. Stars aside, the movie does not seem to offer anything new to the typical Bollywood storyline and that could prove to be a setback for the film.

Disney production’s chick-flick starring Sonam Kapoor in the lead, Khoobsurat features Bollywood debutant Fawad Khan who, from the looks of the trailer, seems quite promising. The brilliant Kiron Kher is seen once again as bringing into life the role of a hilarious mother after Dostaana. While Sonam Kapoor, in the past, is known to have been over-shadowed in films with her fashion statements, this movie seems to show some promise of “acting” on behalf of the fashionista.

All of these movies are scheduled for release only after August 20, prior to which Bollywood will most likely have nothing great to offer. So, start counting the days, because next month will be a busy one for sure.
