Book Review: For One More Day by Mitch Albom

Mitch Albom, a sports writer in the early days of his career, is now one of America’s best selling authors, a journalist, screenwriter, dramatist, radio and television broadcaster and musician. He is known for his poignant and touching writing, especially the way he interweaves characters and situations together and inspires people. As of now he has written four novels, the first of which was Tuesdays with Morrie.

This was the novel which hit the stands and remained on The New York Times’ best seller list for four years. With this novel Mitch Albom gained recognition as a successful writer. His other works include Five People I met in Heaven, Have A Little Faith, For One More Day, And The Winner Is and Duck Hunter Shoots Angel. He has also written many books on sports and sports columns. Also, being an ardent social activis, he is on the boards of various charities and has started many organizations for community work.
For One More Day, published in 2006, is Mitch Albom’s third novel. The storyline weaves intricately around one person and the one day that he gets to spend with his dead mother, bringing out the emotions between son and mother beautifully. The touching storyline and the minutest details of the happenings around them touched the core of my heart and kept me glued to it. The vivid descriptions and the smooth transitions between the past and the present further added flavor to the brilliant writing.

The book is basically about a man named Chick Benetto who is a retired baseball player whose wife and daughter have severed ties with him and now he wants to commit suicide but before he does so he visits his old home where he was born and raised as a kid. He visits his home where he gets to spend a day with his dead mother, Posey Benetto, who died eight years ago. The story with a supernatural flavor is written against the backdrop of a small town where Chick’s family used to live.

It revolves around why Chick Benetto wanted to commit suicide and then Chick telling the story of his life, his marriage, his guilt, the times when his mother stood by him and the times when she didn’t. It is about a son who finds solace in sharing his story and feelings with his dead mother when he is disappointed with life, and his dead mother who shares with him the family secrets. The story continues with what happens to Chick Benetto after visiting this world between life and death.

It is a story of redemption and about the world between life and death. It makes one ponder: what would one do if one got  to spend a day with someone one has lost. It was this realization which made reading this book all the more interesting and captivating for me. A sweet story filled with family, love, guilt and forgiveness, it even helped me realize certain things about life.

The book on the whole provides a simple and easy read wjile imparting  important lessons on life. So, if you are looking for a soft, touching, sweet and an inspirational story touching the strings of your heart then For One More Day is a worthy must read.
