Born free

Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart

Live free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You’re free as the roaring tide
So there’s no need to hide

Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
’cause you’re born free

This thought-provoking song is from the movie “Born free” that speaks about the beauty and significance of freedom. Freedom to follow your heart & live life the way you want.

We often claim that we are free human beings with freedom of thoughts and action. But how many of us abide by this freedom? How many of us manage to break through the insurmountable barrier of parental pressure to fulfill our unique dreams? How many of us have the courage to go against the society to do what our heart wishes to do?

My friend Varun wanted to pursue a career in fine arts after his 12th. He was really passionate about art. But his parents forced him to get into engineering. With no freedom of self expression he suffered bouts of depression. When he could no longer tolerate this trap, he fought with his parents and walked down his own path. Varun is now a successful commercial artist. He is content and happy with his job and finally liberated from the detrimental trap.

There are many youngsters like Varun who are forcibly pushed by well-meaning parents into so called acceptable professions. We live in a society that puts a lot of pressure on financial success. Our parents push us into lucrative conventional careers like engineering, medicine or management rather than letting us do the thinking and decide for ourselves what we want out of life. Our dreams and wishes remain dormant in our hearts finally erupting as a volcano of depression and despair.

Robert frost once said “ Freedom lies in being bold”. You need courage to make bold decisions and stick to them no matter what happens.

Take a stand for your decisions. I remember the time when I decided to quit my job to pursue my passion. I felt trapped in the job I did not like and decided to follow my heart. Quite a few of my relatives and friends said things like “It’s not wise to quit job at this time” and “ You will not be able to make the money you are making now”. The naysayers will always show up when you voice your plans. You have got to ignore them to live the life you want to.

“Freedom is not something that anybody can be given; Freedom is something that people take and people are as free as they want to be.” said James Arthur Baldwin. So there is no way you can blame others for your lack of freedom. You have got to create it for yourself.
