commonwealth games Commonwealth Games: Is it Good for India’s Economy?

India is a developing country. Focus on the word developing as India is not yet developed. Ironically, India is a country which is, on one hand struggling with the problem of poverty since the time of independence while on the other hand is spending millions on the Commonwealth Games!

Forty percent of India’s population is below the poverty line which clearly indicates that the booming Indian economy is still unable to feed a majority of its citizens.

Climatic change like global warming is causing an agricultural crisis for the peasants all over the country, worsening their conditions which, in turn, is leading to inflation in the economy, energy resources are getting depleted, unskilled and poor people are forced to get involved in unorganized employment with least possible wages and lets not forget the skilled and literate unemployed…but who really cares? India is too busy with Commonwealth Games!

India’s present goal should be the development of human resources, dealing with poverty and creating a healthy, wealthy and literate India. I believe that as a result of the approaching Commonwealth Games, India, especially Delhi is undergoing a complete makeover where the infrastructure is concerned. Lavish five-star hotels, better flyovers, etc, are being constructed. Better buses can be seen running on the roads of Delhi.

Why all this? Just to show that India is on its way to become a developed nation soon?

But can it hide those shabby and disguised slums behind the shimmering and glamorous construction? Can it suppress the cries of those million hungry stomachs? Can it? Unfortunately not!

And can anyone explain how modern infrastructure helps those million unemployed men who have to support half a dozen of their family members without any source of income?

I won’t deny the fact that may be these games will have an international impact and benefit a particular section of the society temporarily. But this is where the most significant question arises that if the games will benefit a certain strata of the society which is already rich and powerful then what happens to those strata of the Indian population which is below the poverty line? Who bears the responsibility of their welfare?

I also agree that the Commonwealth Games will usher in a certain amount of employment but will it offer employment to millions of unemployed? And by the way this is only for a temporary period of time. Then what? Back to square one? Thus, a country like India wearing poverty in the form of national shame cannot afford to conduct such games at the cost of its poverty stricken citizens. Therefore India should first win the race against poverty and then think of going international through such ventures.

Hence India’s poverty and the hosting of Commonwealth Games are not at all compatible as for a nation the welfare of its citizen is its first priority and not the conduction of sports and leisure.

  1. “Commonwealth Games: Is it Good for India’s Economy?”

We know the answer to that now! $20 billion in waste, fraud, corruption, and thief for a Shames game…not a good way for a 3rd world country to spend money they don’t have. However, the corrupt crooks India calls politicians/brahmins and their Swiss bankers are very happy and satisfied!

  2. I am totaly disagreeing your view point.Hosting olymics or cwg will not increase gdp. There are some examples like canada.

  3. it does nothing on children but on poor people. government only sees his comforts no one is ready to talk about poor why???? cause they see their own comforts. wgo sees about poor no one……………

  4. is cwg gud for students or not ?

  5. hello everyone..,CWG is good for India, I am strongly agree with it.It will help those 40% ppl below poverty line in few ways::
1…… India has achieved a global recognition after successfully conducting CWG. It creates a better image among other countries. In short ppl will be attracting towards India. Our GDP growth will increase. This helps our govt. to spend more money on those 40% ppl below poverty line.
2……While conducting CWG these slum areas ppl also got advantage. they also got job for a short period. so conducting such event helps those ppl also.
3…….As we successfully organized CWG . we got a strong and valid point to organize OLYMPIC event also.It will also improve our gdp growth. Since in India could n’t implement many facilities on such slum areas ppl coz of low capital money. BUt organizing such events helps a lot to improve our economy.

  6. i`am not happy with these games

  7. i m totally in favour of cwg…..n thanks for providing me with such good points in its favour….they were of great help in preparing my debate speech…..n yes….cwg rocks in all ways people…..

  8. *that are in place

  9. @ RK :
I do agree with what you say. But you are missing a point.
Govt. doesn’t do enough to tackle poverty, accepted.
Govt. spends billions on CWG, accepted.
But its not that our resources are so limited that since we have spent billions on CWG, we can’t spend funds on schemes to benefit the poor. We have the capacity to take care of both the issues simultaneously. We are a trillion dollar economy after all.
But the problem is that govt doesn’t do enough for the poor. It is not because we are spending billions on CWG but because of inefficiency of our ruling class.
So when you say enough is not being done for those unfortunate 40% ppl of our country, blame the non-implementation of various schemes that are places and blame the lack of will on the part of our politicians. But you can’t say all is not well coz of CWG. Thats not fair.
Although the recently exposed corruption in CWG dilutes my argument, but we are not debating that right now.

  10. My question to all those ppl supprtin CWG…if u were among those 40% ppl below poverty line would u dare to say “welcome commonwealth”…othr thn few major cities in India there a some places where ppl are far away from basic needs like food, clothing & shelter..40% ppl are in the lowest slab of Maslow’s pyramid, so hw cn v thnk of such huge investment???

  11. well,i even welcome cwg but the thing is that delhi is more developed than any other city of india and i think some other place where tourists will be more attracted and which is a less known place should have been chosen for building flyovers and all.even employment! i don’t think any one has got it , the venues are still not ready . i don’t think if people would have worked there such a situation would have raised.the whole money is in the pockets of the CORRUPT people working out there.but i would even say that rather then discussing what is right and what is wrong we should hope the venues would be ready before the staring date b’coz i don’t want india to loose her respect in the whole world……….

  12. Definately cwg are welcome progress but the question arises of waste of money resources….i mean the amount of money spent on cwg games is much higher than what should have been.As far as i think, though eradiction of poverty should go parallel with development, more weightage should be given to former. While thinking of organising such events, one should also think the alternate use of such huge amount of money on poverty and comparing the weightage between the two, poverty should be given the first preference as it has more scope in improving economy than cwg games.

  13. TOTALLY agree with Yashi Trivedi. You just stole words from my mouth. CWG rocks!

  14. Yashi Trivedi , on July 7th, 2010 at 5:25 am Said:

“benefit a particular section of the society temporarily” – disagreed!!! Take in particular the example of flyovers and buses. Will they not benefit the common man even after the games? They certainly will. A small benefit, yes, but a visible benefit nevertheless. Do not forget it took an event of the scales of Commonwealth for the government to wake up. Had it not been for the Games, we would have been depraved of even these basic facilities.
Talking about poverty and hunger, you cannot wait to first eradicate these issues and then think of development. They have to go parallel. The amount of revenue the government will generate through these Games is truly massive. And unless the funds pour in, how is government going to be equipped to work for its peoples’ welfare inclusive of burning issues of hunger and the like.
Even the lavish constructions are not going to be laid waste for there will be more events in future for which they can come handy. Its a fruitful one time investment.
In a nutshell, I perceive this event as a welcome change and a booster for the much required development.

  15. very bad
i m asking for questions and it is giving domething else
