The Headley deposition took yet another controversial turn on the fourth day when David Headley deposed before a session’s court in Mumbai from an undisclosed location in the United States.
He let out some rather explosive information about Ishrat Jehan being a part of the LeT’s womens’ wing and a suicide bomber for the same. This came as a shock to the people, as it dug into old wounds to say the least.
For those of you who aren’t able to place the name Ishrat Jehan, here’s a bit of a memory refresher:
Ishrat Jehan is the 19-year-old alleged terrorist who was shot along with three other in an encounter in the state Gujarat in the year 2004.
The Ishrat Jehan case was as convoluted as it gets. Ishrat was killed in an encounter by a team led by DIG D.G Vanjara, along with three other men- Pranesh Pillai (alias Javed Gulam Sheikh), Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar who had alleged links with terrorists, by officers of the Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch.
The police alleged that Ishrat and her associates were Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives involved in a plot to assassinate the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.
The case drew considerable flak and was termed as a staged encounter and Ishrat’s family members and many political activists insisted that she was innocent. So much so that even the CBI declared the encounter as staged and that the police had destroyed the evidence, but it did not comment on whether Ishrat Jahan was an LeT associate or not.
The issue gained serious momentum in 2011 when a Special Investigation Team (SIT) told the Gujarat High Court that the encounter was not genuine, and the victims were killed prior to the date of the staged encounter.

Headley had taken Jehan’s name earlier as well in a statement given to the NIA or National Investigation Agency; however, his words will now be used as evidence since he has deposed before a court of law.
After Headley’s revelations, it is clear that it was not a fake encounter and the seven officers accused in the case are out on bail.
It has also come to light that Major Iqbal of the Pakistan Army has paid 25,000 US Dollars to carry out the 26/11 terrorist attack and LeT handler Sajid Mir gave Headley 40,000 Pakistani rupees to complete the tasks.
He said that he knew Muzzamil Bhatt had planned the attack at Akshardam temple at Gujarat. Muzzamil told him that after Babri Masjid was demolished, it was allowed for them to attack Indian temples.
The deposition keeps getting more and more ugly with each passing day. As the skeletons come tumbling out of the closet, India readies itself for dialogue with Pakistan over the recent revelations, that have taken the battle against terrorism to an all new level.
It’s time India declares a #WarOnTerrorism!
