It was on this day, 20 years ago that six F.R.I.E.N.D.S came into our lives and changed our understanding of friendship forever. It is that one show which does not seem to leave us even today. No matter how many times we watch it, it never gets onto us; it always makes us smile, always cheers us up.
There are innumerous American, British and even our very own Indian sitcoms and daily soaps that are just great; Modern Family, Sherlock Holmes, Breaking Bad, Big Bang Theory, Game of thrones, but nothing has ever stayed with us the way Friends has.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the pilot episode of the show, the popular “Central Perk” has been opened in New York and the pilot episode is being aired in the entire USA.
As we sit here in India, let us have our very own small little celebration by recalling some of the greatest F.R.I.E.N.D.S moments:
One of the most loved scenes in that 10 long years of the show. Yes, “[They] WERE ON A BREAK!”
Ross is a freak, he just can’t let it go and he is way too much obsessed with “unagi”
Who doesn’t remember the time when Rachel and Joey started dating and Ross was “totally fine”
The relation that Chandler and Joey share stands as an epitome of friendship even today.
The moment Chandler and Monica got together for the first time, we just knew that it fit and they were going to last forever.
We were all so happy when Phoebe finally met Mike and they fell in love; she never had a normal life or a family and Mike completed her in every way possible. Mike surely was the only person who could have ever fit in as the seventh friend.
The classic Joey who doesn’t share food but is always ready to pounce at somebody else’s plate
Competitive Monica and Ross fight over the Geller cup, while Joey and Chandler fight over the Dutch girl. Phoebe and Rachel surely were the victims. But eh, we loved every moment when all six of them were together.
Of course, much awaited Thanksgiving episode (which broke our hearts since it was the last time we ever celebrated Thanksgiving with the F.R.I.E.N.D.S) when Monica finally let go off her obsession with cleanliness because they “are getting a baby!”
Surely to some up what Friends means to each of us is not enough in these few video clips, because they occupy a place in our heart that can’t be put to words. But there’s a beauty to Friends that no other show ever had (and maybe, ever will): You can go back to it over and over again.
So, have a happy re-watch!
