Why India Needs To Take Cognizance Of The Epidemic Of Suicide Immediately

Twinkle twinkle little star,

Let me go get hit by a car,

How I really wish to die,

Jump off the roof and try to fly,

Twinkle twinkle little knife,

Let me end this wretched life…

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death in India. Those between the age of 15-24 years are particularly vulnerable to this ever-increasing tendency to claim their own lives. While suicide among children is rare, it is said to increase rapidly as they reach adolescence.

Earlier the cause of death for older teenage girls was the abysmal mortality rate. Adolescent pregnancy was one of the biggest reasons behind maternal mortality. It is argued that pregnancies at such a young age are most likely to happen because of a lack of both, education and general awareness. Even in this day and age, there are girls who have to get married under coercion because of social pressure and then later forced to have kids. Since the girls are not educated, they fail to understand the repercussions of conceiving at such a young age. And since sex education is scarcely present in most parts of the country,  it causes unawareness in young girls. Talking about sex is still considered a taboo in our country. Girls feel ashamed of taking up contraceptive measures. Either they are way too expensive or not available legally. Many a times they are abused brutally during their pregnancies which often leads to their death.

According to a report released by WHO, luckily the rate of maternal mortality has tumbled down. It feels good to know that the number of people dying because of pregnancy and childbirth complications has dropped by 50 percent between 1990 and 2013. But sadly, the cause of death from maternal mortality has now changed to self harm or suicide.

The societal pressure is still there, the only difference is that from the lack of education, it has now moved to over pressure of studies. Bullying is one of the reasons behind suicide. Instead of standing up for what is a wrong, teens now-a-days choose the easy path which often means ending their life. It’s the teenage period where we come to terms with our sexuality and for many of us, determining it turns out to be complicated. When we do, realizing we are homosexual or bisexual, the thought of fitting in the society haunts our mind. This is also one of the major reasons behind committing suicide. Drug abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence, etc. are also the reasons behind the suicidal tendencies among the adolescents.

I know that during our teenage phase we go through a lot of emotional changes, but is committing suicide the best way out? I personally feel that committing suicide is a sign of weakness. We never find solution to a problem by running away from it. Face it and let it make you grow stronger as a person. There are a lot of challenges which we are going to face further in our lives.

As it said, “Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem”, you have so much to look forward. Don’t give up all too soon.
