Into the Self

There’s always a movie in our life that changes the way we perceive the world. “Into the Wild” is one such movie that changed mine. This movie is based on a novel by Jon Krakauer, which portrays the adventures of a real life hero, Christopher McCandless. The movie has been directed by Sean Penn and stars Emile Hirsch.

Into the Wild is the story of Christopher McCandless, whose ultimate goal is to live alone and off the land in Alaska. To pursue his dream, he destroys his credit cards, identity cards and donates $24000 to the charity, and sets out for his journey to Alaska. Along the way, he meets many people. Each individual shows his aspect of life to which Christopher disagrees. First, he meets farm owner and does ajob for him to make his way to Alaska, and then he meets a couple with whom Christopher shares an emotional bond. Christopher, unperturbed by these emotions, continues his journey and in the final part of his journey, he meets an old man who is a leather worker. He asks Christopher to adopt him, to which Christopher denies. Finally he reaches his goal and finds life difficult in Alaska, as a loner. The movie’s basic crux lies in the fact that Human Freedom is more important than anything else. In one scene, Christopher says, “more than money, things power; give me truth”

The performance by the actors seems more than real. Emile Hirsch (Christopher McCandless) has given a brilliant performance. Other actors in the movie have also given their best like Marcia Gay Harden, who got best supporting actress award.

Some scenes in this movie are simply awesome. Like the one in which Christopher leaves his girlfriend and he tells her that when you want something in life, go ahead and grab it, and then her girlfriend grabs him and hugs him.

The quotes of Into the Wild are nuggets of wisdom. I personally like the quote- “Happiness is real when it’s shared”. Another aspect of the movie that adds magic to this movie is its songs. The music has been composed by Eddie Vender and his songs strike us the moment we listen to them because the lyrics of the music are philosophical. A song called Society goes on like this-

Oh it’s a mystery to me.

We have a greed, with which we have agreed…

and you think you have to want more than you need…

until you have it all, you won’t be free.

Into the Wild has received strong positive reviews from the critics and has got couple of Academy Awards too. But some critics feel that the character of Christopher wasn’t the heroic kind. But others, including myself, believe that Christopher is a symbol of living your dream, no matter what happens.

I would say that this movie might seem boring to the people who only want to get entertained, because this movie is beyond the traditional ones and is something you don’t see often.

All in all, this movie has changed me for good; I hope it will do well to you!
