Disney has released the first teaser trailer for Rob Marshall’s new musical Into the Woods, based on the Broadway show of the same name. The teaser reveals the various Disney fairytales being twisted into on big, dark musical story. Meryl Streep stars as the witch, but this teaser is all about introducing the rest of the cast: Emily Blunt, James Corden, Chris Pine, Anna Kendrick, Tracey Ullman, Christine Baranski, and Johnny Depp. It offers not even a hint of what the musical has to offer.
The movie is supposed to be a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.
Into the Woods is a Stephen Sondheim play that was first performed in 1986. Sondheim had included various classic fairy tale characters (the big bad wolf, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.) in a play that overturns and deconstructs some of the fairy tale metaphors.
Musical fans will be disappointed by the lack of even a note of singing in the teaser. It will be worth paying attention to see if the next theatrical trailer actually has the whole company belting tunes from the original show. The bad news is that the film is directed by Rob Marshall who, with all due respect, has yet to craft a good movie. If he manages to pull this off, he will be added to likes of Tim Burton.
Stephen Sondheim, the lyricist, said that Disney objected to the predatory sexual awakening story between the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood, so maybe Johnny Depp creeping on the little girl who played Annie won’t be quite so ludicrous.
Walt Disney’s efforts to hide Depp’s look as the big bad wolf is going great as we can see absolutely nothing of him. But a little mystery in these early teaser trailers is always favoured. The film is set to release on Christmas day this year. Hence, the success of the movie will not depend on die-hard fans but the interest of those who would like to spend their December 25 watching an adventure starring kaleidoscopic set of actors of various disciplines.
It is certainly the kind of ambitious, star-driven, and female-centric picture that we want to see from Disney as the year draws to a close. Although, there are rumours about a bucket load of changes from the show and the “watering-down” of content. But that shouldn’t stop the movie to make heaps of riches at the box office. Nonetheless, the teaser manages to give one minute and 52 seconds worth of waves of goosebumps.
