The monsoon has arrived with full force at last, giving us heavy downpours and showers intermittently through the day. Rain is one of those things that you either love or hate, just like Twilight and blue cheese. Unfortunately though, rain is pretty much impossible to ignore—especially when it comes to picking an outfit.
Many people despair dressing for the rain. Getting drenched and having your look wrecked can completely ruin your day, but let’s not surrender our style to the rain—our fashionable selves are better than that! Sure, dressing for the rain can be tricky because there are so many things to consider, but there’s no need to sacrifice style. Don’t let the rain dampen your inner “fashionistan” spirit!
Here are a few tips to aid you on your quest to look gorgeous even as you splash through all those puddles.
1. Pick materials for your outfits carefully.
I guess this goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway because it is just that important: rain is ruthless and can be fatal to your favourite things, so don’t risk it! Rain has the power to completely ruin many types of material, especially leather that hasn’t been treated with protector, and suede. Play it safe and wear things like rubber, protected leather, and pleather for the rain, especially for items like handbags and shoes that are vulnerable to destruction.
2. Plan ahead with umbrellas and rain boots.
Umbrellas can save your makeup, hair, and items of clothing from ruination and can look pretty charming too. They come in many exciting patterns and shapes so avoid sticking to boring old black ones; throw them away and head to the store for some cheap yet cute finds. Rain boots are great too—they’re practical as well as fun! Don’t be afraid to go crazy with rain boots and umbrellas; even kid’s umbrellas can add a certain je ne sais quoi to outfits that makes them superbly endearing.
3. Add a bit of brightness to your look.
Rain is gloomy; it is depressing and dark and often brings moods down. But just because the weather is depressing, it doesn’t mean your look has to be too! Don’t let the rain tell you how to live (or dress). Remember, looking good equals feeling good.
Warm colours, including autumnal shades like bronze and maroon, work well for rainy days, as do floral and neon prints. Be vibrant and fun, but don’t overdo the brightness! There’s always the possibility of having too much of a good thing.
4. Be wise with your lowers.
Dark colours work best for both pants and shoes in the rain—walking home in the mud isn’t going to do much for your light denims, so avoid the mess and pick your lowers smartly. Open shoes are huge no-no’s when it’s raining—you do not want to leave your feet exposed to the wet brutalities of nature! Also, shorts are better than pants for the rain; pants soak up a lot of water, are forced to endure mud and puddles, and take a long time to dry! (Rompers, which are especially in style at the moment, make for a great look.)
5. Either wear minimal makeup or go for waterproof makeup.
I think this one is self explanatory—no, you will not look attractive with mascara and eyeliner streaming down your face.
6. Layer it up.
This is not only practical, since you can protect your bottom layers well, but also makes for an extremely trendy look.
7. Be smart when accessorizing.
Items like bracelets and watches are especially prone to damage by water, so make sure to waterproof your accessories!
A few ideas to get you going: Firstly, TRENCH COATS. They are somehow perfect for rainy days—classy and put together, just the way we would all like to be—and never fail to disappoint. Secondly, if you live somewhere where it gets cold when it rains, call upon your trusty, funky hats, scarves, and sweaters to help you look amazing.
As you can see, rain is no excuse to be boring with the way you dress. So next time, don’t let the showers get to you! And go ahead and splash around in those puddles a little—you know you want to, and your outfit can handle it! Don’t ever let it rain on your fashion parade.
