Making Of Mary Kom: Nobody Else Could Have Done It Better

With the release of Mary Kom, many have come out from the theatre, criticising Priyanka Chopra playing the lead role as a boxer. Someone’s complaint is that she does not look North-Eastern enough, while someone else’s is that she doesn’t look like a boxer. All of these points could all be valid, no doubt. But here’s why I think nobody else could have done what Priyanka Chopra has done.

It is way too easy for someone to sit at home criticising an actor. But when actors have to go out of their way to convince the audience of his or her character, it takes a lot of hard work and sweat as proved by the video that highlights the making of Mary Kom. Especially when movies are inspired by true stories, the actor playing the lead role needs to deeply engage with the mind of the person whose life is being brought to the silver screen.

When it comes to sports biopic like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Mary Kom, the task becomes even more difficult. Firstly, there is a need to develop the physique of the actor like that of a sportsperson. Secondly, the actor needs to be trained in the sport so as to bring into life the sport that inspired the sportsperson. Doing all of it in just few months is a lot more difficult than it is to comprehend the same sitting in front of the theatre, looking forward to be entertained.

Priyanka Chopra, for Mary Kom, had undergone special training to build the physique like that of a sportsperson. She even trained in boxing and managed to pick it up well enough to convince her audience that she is playing the role of a boxer. While it may be true that she does not look like a real boxer, but that is the case: she in not a boxer, but an actor who got few months to learn boxing. As for Mary Kom, she has been a boxer since she developed the passion for it. That is exactly the difference between Mary Kom and Priyanka Chopra. Only a boxer would be able to play the role of a boxer.

Mary Kom was made as a commercial Bollywood film that required some amount of glamour to be able to draw the audience. Complaints aside, bringing together that glamour along with the attitude of a boxer, I think Priyanka Chopra has performed pretty amazing as Mary Kom. We could all criticise the direction, the cinematography, or the music. But considering the amount of sweat and blood put in by Priyanka Chopra, I think it would be unfair to attack her.

Priyanka Chopra is a brilliant actor. She has, in the recent past, managed to convince of her role to the audience. Be it as a model in Fashion, or an autistic person in Barfi, she has been able to move the viewer. There is absolutely no doubt, you will love her in Mary Kom as well!
