Our Phillum Imagination

The Indian Film Industry has been India’s major source of identification from time immemorial. It is one of the largest film industries in the world, with millions of dedicated viewers worldwide. India eats drinks and sleeps movies.

It never fails to enchant and capture the imagination of its huge fan following. From romance to laugh riots to action: from magic to horror to thrillers; from the supernatural to the underworld – the industry has time and again proven itself to be the master of all trades. Stylishly made chic films, dark gothic movies, grand epical period ventures or hard hitting realistic cinema – Indian Cinema has seen it all.

Bollywood always connects. No matter how many B-grade or worse substandard flicks it churns out, Bollywood always remains a hit. Immense faith in veteran actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Naseeruddin Shah, Kamaal Hassan, Irrfan Khan, Rekha, Shabana Azmi, the magnetic pull of superstars like Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukherjee or the curiosity about fresh faces like Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan, always succeed in pulling large huge crowds to the movie halls. As we sit on the plush multiplex seats and stare at the 70 mm screen, we are somehow pulled into the reel world and for the moment, we magically become a part of the film itself. A film like Rang De Basanti is not just a film – it is an indescribable experience, enough to give you goosebumps. A Dil Chahta Hai re-establishes the preciousness of friends in one’s life. A Taare Zameen Par breaks our judgmental barriers. A Lagaan inflames us with nationalistic ardour. A Chak De! India fills us with renewed zeal and inspires us to become the go-getters! Bollywood rejuvenates every emotion and brings to life such facets within us that we never even knew existed.

Bollywood, as its directors proclaim, is the stuff that dreams are made of. Hundreds of youngsters aspire to make it big here one day. The call of the glamour, fame and wealth of Bollywood brings innumerable migrants into Mumbai, where a new star is born everyday. Some disappear into oblivion and some leave footsteps. Bollywood music is omnipresent as even the smallest kid shakes a leg to a “Mauja hi Mauja” and the even the remotest village plays “Hare Krishna Hare Ram”! Cult films, meaningful cinema, masala potboilers, skin show – all come from the same cauldron. Those which touch us are immortalized, we dream the dreams they offer us and make the stars our God. Thriving on Bollywood music, with bated breath we await every big release from that industry which breaks down all walls of linguistic regionalism and appeals to us as something essentially Indian – “Janmabhoomi hai hamari shaan se kahenge hum, sab hi toh bhai bhai pyaar se rahenge hum, Hindustani naam hamara hai
