Comedy generally refers to amuse people by creating laughter, which can usually be seen in Theatres, Stand-up comedy, Movies and Television. Its signs in India can be found in the Sanskrit age as well when dramas were depicted for the kings, in a lighter sense. After the launch of cartoon characters, comedy took another level in the entertainment industry.

Comedy, in India, till the early 20th Century was meant for general masses without any chance of adult content involved in it. The idea of involving adult comedy in the movies was no doubt a step forward in the Indian entertainment industry. But, with that came the intrusion of the Censor Board, now called Central Board of Film Certification (C.B.F.C).

With the movies involving double meanings (with one intending of adult talks) had to go under strict supervision of C.B.F.C before release to the common audiences. Movies like Masti, Kya Kool Hai Hum, etc. had to undergo several cuts by the board before being released with an “A” certificate. It didn’t end over here. The movies are still given a time slot later than 11 p.m. if they have to be aired on national television.

Hollywood movies on the other hand have content which is more explicit than Bollywood; still the movies get released without making major news regarding censor board problems. Series of American pie movies, which if were in India would have been related to soft porn, were released in United States of America with Restricted Audience tag, but no major cuts.

In my opinion, this is complete disregard to the director’s work (making cuts), which makes him/her more unanswerable to what should be done in the future. Even the actors need to be open to such subjects. Being afraid of doing such movies is just a loss to their talent and opportunities as well.

It can be questioned that on one side we see our country competing with the world in every dimension, but when it comes to porn comedy (Kya Kool Hai Hum 3), we make a U-turn in our policies and make it look like a taboo, which in turn makes Indian Film Industry just a laughing stock in the modernized West.

It’s time we rethink about “sex” in the movies and get our questions answered. This can be of real help for not only Bollywood standards, but Indian society as well. Accept it or deny it, sex, after all, is still a taboo in this country.
