How often does one see in Indian sports that one of our players is amongst the top 10 players in the world? Sania Mirza is someone who started the trend and was probably the first Indian woman to make a mark in International sports by ranking in the top 30 tennis players in the world. But Sania has been unlucky. She has plagued by injuries and bad form which has resulted her to drop in rankings. This has also meant that the craze that was building up around her in the country is dying down. However if the Sania Mirza craze is dying, the Saina Nehwal mania is rising. The 18 year old is creating waves in the international badminton circuit and was semi finalist in the recent world super series making her the first Indian women to reach that far.
Saina Nehwal is already a champion in the junior circuit and won the World Youth Badminton Championships in 2008 again being the first indian woman to do so. However she made a real impact on the seniors circuit when she qualified for the quarter finals of the Beijing Olympics 2008 singles badminton event. The year 2008 has been a great year for the teen sensation and has made an entry into the top 10 of the world. If she can keep her fitness and state of mind in good condition she has the chance of leaving a major mark on the sport of badminton and at the same time recreate the glory that Prakash Padukone created for India in the international sports arena.
