Samsung Galaxy Ace – An Ace indeed!

Living in a hi-tech world, where smartphones have become more of a style statement than a problem solver, my desire for a smartphone was for the very same purpose of building style quotient. After doing a thorough survey on a wide range of smartphones, from iPhone to Androids, from HTC to Nokia, I finally narrowed down to Samsung Galaxy Ace GT – S5830. With a perfect mix of a wide range of functionality and adorable aesthetic, this Android phone fits very well in the Samsung series to compete in the midrange smartphone segment. Priced at around INR 14,000 this phone is the best match for someone who is price conscious and yet is looking for a sleek multipurpose smartphone.

Hard outside

With a look and feel very similar to the iPhone, this phone is smaller, lighter and easily fits inside the pocket. A rough black back with metallic sides gives it a robust look and there is classy white variant of the back cover for an occasional change. The 3.5 inches TFT LCD screen with a capacitive touch offer a fast and convenient touchpad and user interface. Its glass being reflective spoils the experience a little, especially in sunlight. Another disadvantage is that it doesn’t have a front camera, so people wanting a smartphone for video calling should give it a second thought. But the 5.0 megapixels back camera with a strong LED flash gives it an edge over the higher end Samsung Galaxy S. With a microUSB port and a 3.5 jack it can be easily connected to the computer as well as the television. It also has a slot for microSD card which can extend its memory up to 32GB making it suitable for any kind of data storage from music files to movies.

Soft Inside

Operating on Android V2.2 and running on an 800MHz ARM 11 processor; it has a good battery backup which lasts more than few of the high end smartphones. The best part, as applicable for any other Android phone is the vast pool of Apps that it provides. From conventional ones like email services, facebook and youtube to the highly professional ones like thinkfree office (substitute for MS office), it provides the ease of accessing such applications without depending on internet. Sadly, it doesn’t have flash support and at times user can face trouble while browsing content with flash. But it supports java applications and that makes it sufficiently capable of handling web content and other applications.

What makes it fun?

The wide range of Android Apps provide easy access to daily news, train booking, best deals in city and the list goes endless, making the experience really fulfilling for the user. The gravity sensor is not as great as iPhone, but nevertheless Angry Birds fans will have a good time shooting the pigs. Apart from the regular features, Galaxy Ace has some interesting features like geo tagging (adding geographic location to messages, photos etc.), face and smile detection, swype keypad (drag and type on the touchpad), voice memo/dial (voice recognizer) which make the overall package a lot more fun. The music quality is nowhere comparable to Sony Experia, but as a cell phone it has decent sound quality on both FM as well as MP3 player.

So much for so little, this gadget is sure to change the way you interact with the outside world. A multipurpose phone at such a reasonable price; it is definitely the best deal in the midrange Android handsets, reaching the hands of the common man and laying the base for Samsung’s success in the smartphone market.
