Sania Mirza Was, Is And Will Be World’s No 1

Saturday night will go down as a glorious night in India’s sports history. In fact, this year’s coveted Wimbledon championship will go down in history as the event that will remain in the hearts and minds of every Indian. Leander Paes won Men’s doubles, Sumit Nagal won Boy’s doubles and our very own Sania Mirza became the first Indian woman to win the Women’s Doubles title at the prestigious All England Lawn Tennis Championship.

Sania Mirza, with her partner Martina Hingis, claimed the Wimbledon’s Women’s Doubles title after a tough fight with the Russian pair- Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
This victory was as special for Hingis as it was for India’s numerouno female tennis player. While Sania won her first Wimbledon title by beating the Rusian duo 5-7 7-6(4) 7-5 in an exhilarating finale, Hingis won a title after 17 years. The match, however, was not an easy one; struggling at 2-5, they won four games in a row to be in a position to serve out the match. Both the girls played with all their might, and provided the spectators a beautiful match, only to be topped with the sweet victory.

“(the victory) feels like it was in another life”, exclaimed Hingis, who returned to the sport after 8 years of retirement. As for Mirza, she hoped that her victory fuels the young generation of tennis players in India. “I hope it inspires a lot of girls and makes them believe they can be grand slam champions too,” she said.

The nation is proud of Sania, and greetings have started pouring in for the wonder woman.

The country is proud of you Sania. Thank you for inspiring thousands of us!
