This woman has made history by sealing a berth in the upcoming summer Olympics in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro. Dipa Karmakar, who could not clinch a place for herself during the World Championships in November, was informed last month that she had been shortlisted.
According to newspaper reports, the 22-year-old gymnast from Agartala in Tripura gave her finest performance to seal the deal for herself. Her total score of 52.698 points in the qualifying event for the Olympics helped her reserve a berth for artistic gymnastics in the Rio Games to be held in August. With this, Karmakar becomes the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics. She also becomes the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the quadrennial spectacular since 1964.
In independent India, 11 male gymnasts have taken part in the Olympics, but this will the first for an Indian woman.
Deepak Kagra, an international referee, said Dipa’s strong performance would definitely have qualified her for Rio Olympics.
“It was a very good score from Dipa and we were certain that she would qualify. Now the world body has published the names of the gymnasts who have qualified for the Olympics and her name is there. The gymnastics community is proud of Dipa’s achievements,” he told the Press Trust of India.
This brilliant piece of news comes at a time when gymnastics, as a sport, is struggling to stay afloat in our country. Reeling under power-play and turmoil – with rival factions holding elections, claiming to be the national federation – Karmakar’s qualification comes as a breath of fresh air not only for the sport, but also for the country.
This season, let us all raise a toast to Indian women, who are consistently setting laudable examples for the world to follow. We are in the middle of a revolution where women are coming out and fighting for their inherent rights, representing our country and taking the national pride to celestial heights.
Karmakar is an inspiration to all of us. When idle minds were charting out the ‘feminine code of conduct’, this gymnast was fighting against odds to take the country’s pride several notches higher, and for that we owe her.
Here’s wishing this talented gymnast the best in her Olympic endeavour.
