Slut Walk – Really the Solution?

  • SumoMe

Am not going to dwell into the history of how slut walk started and why it started. Someone said something in Canada and suddenly women all over the globe has this newly found sense of self-respect. I don’t get this. I am a feminist too, but I do not think any kind of slut-walks is going to change how a rapist thinks or acts. Someone who can rape is not the person who will get affected by any such movements. There are psychological reasons behind the actions. If this slut walk have had happened in May 1991, Garrido wouldn’t have done what he did, well I disagree.

And we Indians have simply mastered the act of copying what the west does. Besharmi Morcha happened in Bhopal and now in Delhi. I was teased on the road side back in Bangalore (2004) twice. One was drunk another was a labourer. I do not think any sort of Besharmi Morcha or Slut Walk will ever effect such men. They are on a hunt all the time and they always will be. It does not matter what you wear, however it does matter when combined with where you are and at what time. When I was teased, I was crossing the road and there were around 20 people crossing the road at that time. This man simply found an opportunity and did what he wanted to do! I did not even see his face, I was shocked, I screamed and in the meantime he was already lost in the crowd and the traffic signal turned green, vehicles started! I could not do anything. I had nightmares after the incident and similar incident repeated in the same area. This time I did not let the man go and slapped him. Both incidents happened around 7pm. After these two incidents I started keeping a knife in my bag. And I did keep it for years to come.

I do believe every woman has the right to wear what she would like to wear. Every woman has the right to roam around the streets when she has to, even if she simply fancies a walk at 2 in the morning; the work demands or not, be it any damn reason. There was this journalist who was victimised in Delhi, not because she wasn’t dressed appropriately but because someone saw an opportunity because of the wee hours. Sheila Dixit had uttered a real nonsensical remark about the whole episode; I wish Indian women had done something back then rather than following what the west did now. Rather than shedding your clothes for a Slut Walk or singing slogans will not help. There are hunters waiting for prays everywhere. One got to be strong, take precautions and be comfortable with what one wears. It would be more appropriate to carry a pepper spray, learn some basic personal safety tricks, such precautionary measures would go long way than walking on the streets copying what the west does. In west, a rapist gets 431 years of jail, in India the case will run for years and if the person belongs to elite family it will never get resolved.

For those who believe in following a global movement shall read upon rape, self-defence and male psychology. As per Yale’s study on Rape Psychology, Sexual desire is less a motivation for the man than violent aggression. Women empowerment, liberation is all ridiculous till we keep asking for it from men. We are humans first and equally deserve to live the way we wish. I bet the women who walked the Besharmi Morcha or Slut Walk yesterday, will go back home and bitch about what the other women wore and how unprepared they were, or could not carry the outfit.

I recall when the German girl was killed in Goa, there was this public opinion *Why can’t they wear proper clothes in India*! Even in the Common Wealth Games’ website it was mentioned that the tourists shall dress as per Indian sensibilities. Would you accept today if someone walks in Bikini on Delhi Roads? I do not think so. For us Kareena donning a bikini is nothing less than watching an X rated movie and we talk about miniskirts and not being judged! Give me a break!!

I think everyone’s safety is in their own hands, be it a man or woman. When you step out for a BesharmiMorcha, do ask yourself a question, what will help me more; a slogan that I carry in this crowd or learning some self-defence tricks and being aware of my surroundings?

By the way, I hear PoonamPandey will lead Mumbai’s slut walk!! The same woman who stole the thunder of SRT’s first & (may be only) world cup? The woman who could not keep her promise is their leader! Well, I let the participants & organizers explain this further.
