Teaching, A Journey Of Learning Gone Wrong?

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.

A role and presence of teacher in our life is as important as it is understated. They are the stepping stones that lead to our education, knowledge and success, and no wonder our parents spend a dime while educating us. The need for education is so much that parents are also giving donation so that they give their students the best of education that is available. Education is important and teachers are like our stepping stones to success.

They are the answer to our inquisitiveness about the workings of the world, they are our answers when we are standing at a crossroad, but at times, they are our answers to everything that is wrong in the world.

People have known to grow crazy with power, and so has our few teachers. While the instances of bullying by teachers have never failed to surface time and again, we have been encountered with many cases that showcase another heinous level on how teachers behave. In the month of August, several parents filed a complaint against a teacher in a panchayat school in Madurai for beating their students blue and black. It isn’t the typical case of getting beaten up to learn an important lesson, it is a case wherein a person in authority vents out their frustration on someone who is essentially not in a position of control.

Teachers have beaten students from KG for not eating lunch, or not writing properly. I am a left-handed person, but that didn’t help my teacher for forcing me to use my right hand to write. I was beaten, bullied and made fun of, not by my fellow classmates, but my teacher who thought being a left-handed person was a sin, and beating is the way to thwart it.

These instances reek nothing but of the systematic failure of our education system who has failed to provide us with teachers who are qualified and trained to be good at their jobs. The teachers aren’t sensitized enough to cope up with various students at many level. Teaching requires patience and kindness, something many of our teachers have lost.

In the face of competition many parents also ask the teachers to be strict, and thus this showcases nothing but failure of communication that should happen between two guiding forces in a kids’ life. The teacher should be able to make the parent understand that every child is different, and some way or another, such competition and pressure can impact the mental health of a child.

This is the mental and physical aspect of how a teacher ridicules their students. Another level is with teaching. There has to be a reason why so many tuition centres and coaching institutes are doing wonders. The dedication and the level with which kids are being taught nowadays is deteriorating, hence parents have to spend more money to afford decent tuition so as to not hamper the education of a kid.

There must be regular inspections wherein the environment in a classroom can be judged, there must be a healthy relationship between parents and teachers so as to work collectively for the benefit of a kid, consulting and at time correcting one another. Also, there must be a channel wherein students can report such abuse they undergo from their teachers unabashedly. The Principal must make sure that there are seminars and workshops in constancy for the teachers, so that they can better themselves with time rather than suffer the burn of deterioration.

After all, as per the words of celebrated author Paulo Coelho-

What is a teacher? I’ll tell you: it isn’t someone who teaches something, but someone who inspires the student to give of her best in order to discover what she already knows.
