Its Google vs. Apple
Apple has been in the news throughout 2012. First with the launch of iPhone 5 then the iPad mini, then the iTunes store (India) and now it is doing the rounds for its web mapping service.
Apple Maps in the iOS 6 is one of the biggest goof ups by Apple this year, which is so unlike it. Instead of directing people to Mildura in Victoria, it sent them to a snake pit in the desert. The motorists were stranded in an unknown land for more than 24 hours, without food or water. Worst of all, they had no network and weren’t able to use their phones to contact people for help.
The police said, “Anyone travelling to Mildura or other locations within Victoria should rely on other forms of mapping until this matter is rectified.”
Major errors were noted by iPhone users all over the world. The app pointed out landmarks that were located in the sea; railway stations and towns were missing completely; as stated above, there were towns that were plotted far away from their exact location.
“At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment,” said Tim Cook in a letter posted on the Apple website.
He even advised users of iOS 6 to use the web version of Google maps as the latest operating system doesn’t support Google Maps. “While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app,” said Mr. Cook.
Apple released its new Maps application in September this year with the iOS 6 but as you can see it did not turn out to be so “user friendly”. This was one of the latest updates to the operating system that runs the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The new operating system dropped Google Maps, and replaced it with a mapping service created by Apple.
It seems as if this step was taken by Tim Cooks to remove the competition but, as you can see, it did not turn out so well. In fact, Eric Schmidt, Google’s executive chairman, teased his rival. “We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know,” he said.
However, on Wednesday, Google’s new iOS 6 map application was released for the iPhone and as expected, it has become the most downloaded app ever since. This provided an insight into the unpopularity of Apple Maps.
The new app has features which were previously available for android phones only. With the new app, users of Apple products can now access public transit information, live traffic and the popular street view feature. This whole mistake has hampered the reputation of Apple. It seems as if after Steve Jobs, Apple has become careless with its reputation.
Meanwhile, Apple is trying to fix their app. But, even if they do, people are still going to prefer Google Maps. After all it has one billion monthly active users and the Apple app is probably best suited to those who don’t mind taking risks and want to be adventurous, maybe swim with the fishes while looking for the mall or something.
So, all the best Apple!!
