The Expendables – Review

After a long wait, here is that one in a million well-directed movies, starring a dream cast that any action filmmaker would vie for. Amidst mixed responses, our beloved action heroes from the decades-gone-by have been able to pull the audience to the box office, nevertheless. This movie promises and delivers an overabundance of testosterone!

Casting Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Stathom, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture, Steve Austin and cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger…Ahhh! I am still in awe, unable to come out of the trance… This film came as a pleasant surprise as it was reasonable, as apposed to a crazy mess that was expected out of casting together so many action biggies, all at once! The storyline is very simple, moving in a single file – a group of mercenaries go and help out a damsel in distress. Emotions, brotherhood and action reign supreme throughout the entire run time.

I will refrain from talking about the story as even a little bit will reveal too much. With a veritable assortment of action superstars, Stallone, a veteran actor-director, has made a very successful attempt to give the audiences something apart from Rocky, Rambo, Die Hard, Predator or Terminator. It feels fresh and yet maintains that out of the 80s’ ruggedness. The sequences formulate a dripping wet environment, oozing sweat and masculinity. The action, exposition, humour, blood, sweat, adrenaline and witty one-liners, all make a perfect blend for one super interesting must watch.

The only place where it falls back a little is where some of the explosions and blood shots look artificial and the close ups are too close to understand what is happening. The director has not even tried to make the star cast act – he has just concentrated on full on action, which accounts for the loose screenplay at a few places.

The death and destruction filmed is magnificent, and is rather pleasing because we see good emerging victorious over evil. This film is not about proper enunciation, witty dialogues, or even a plot – it is about the action stars of the last four decades coming together, fighting and blowing things up. Seeing them all together is a dream come true for all action-movie lovers, and this is the reason which justifies that the line up has not been wasted!

The awesome threesome: by far the best scene I have seen in ages. Seeing the three super-duper stars namely Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis,  is one frame is and eternal moment which has created history in the film making industry. If nothing else, one must watch this movie not because it is extraordinary but because it is ordinary with amazing performances from our extraordinary stars…
