The Legend Rises

History has been created. A maverick’s fond dream, which not many would have thought would materialize, is not a dream anymore. Barack Obama, an African American has won the race to unarguably one of the most powerful and coveted political positions in the world. He is the 44th President of the U.S.

Barack Hussein II Obama, a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he became the first black person to serve as president of the Harvard Law Review is a gifted orator. The senator from Illinois is a charismatic personality who has managed to be popular worldwide especially among young people. His campaigns and debates have had an astounding turn over in terms of an audience. In his two years of rigorous toil to reach the White House he built his image as a politician, who has a grip on the complex changes being faced by Americans in an increasingly globalized world. He also portrayed himself as someone who can be trusted the maximum.

In the race to White House, his main rival was the republican candidate and senator from Arizona, John McCain.Mr Obama owing to his charisma and adeptness in national and international affairs managed an edge over Mr McCain. Mr Obama’s fresh ideas on Iraq, global crisis etc was highly welcomed. He came across as a person who would build a coalition that reflects different shades of opinion and as one who rose above partisanship. During campaigns Obama and his running mate Joe Biden projected themselves to be the much required change from the disastrous Republican George Bush’s tenure. They assiduously claimed to be the agents of a prolific change. Obama capitalized on an anti- Republican sentiment linking Mr McCain to Mr Bush. While Mr McCain’s campaign has tried to cast Mr. Obama as too inexperienced, too liberal and too tainted by associations with unsavory characters. His middle name was often highlighted citing it as a means to propagate that he practices Islam and in the process there were perpetual attacks on his loyalty to the nation. But McCain’s admission that he isn’t great with economics and Sarah Palin, as his choice of running mate did him severe damages.

A look at the Presidential Election 2008 reveals that it has been different this year. This year’s campaigns and rallies were the longest and the most expensive ever. The Obama -McCain duo spent nearly $1 billion to win the election. This was the first time in U.S. history that two sitting senators were running against each other for the President’s post and the first time an African- American was a presidential nominee for a major party, as well as the first time both major candidates were born outside the continental United States—Hawaii for Obama and the Panama Canal Zone for McCain.

Well, I see Mr Obama’s victory as yet another example of how determination, will power and sincere effort can surpass almost anything. An African -American being elected as the President of US which bears an infamous history of racial discrimination and slavery affirms that he definitely has some incredible skills. Undoubtedly, American economic and political affairs will continue to influence the world scenario for years to come and now is the time to welcome Mr Obama to lead the front.
