The All India Bakchod (AIB) Roast which was uploaded on YouTube on 28 January was taken down after a few days following lawsuits slapped against them. It has been the hot topic for never-ending arguments ever since. This has been the first time ever where such an assorted group of comedians raised a nation wide controversy for their comical stints.
Various Bollywood actors have expressed their diverse opinions on the AIB roast. Recently, however, the actor-turned-interior designer Twinkle Khanna’s fierce take on the AIB roast controversy has set new parameters altogether. Her column in The Times of India defending the controversial AIB roast has raised certain important aspects regarding the concept of freedom of expression in India.
Twinkle Khanna, in her article, sheds much light on the hypocrisy of the Indians. The whole nation, she points out, is busy being offended by such insignificant matters like AIB roast whereas there are some very serious issues that remain unattended. The actress brings out the irony of people who want to build statues worth crores, even though only 10% of India’s child population has access to higher education.
Twinkle Khanna goes on to say that if something would really offend her, it would not be the AIB roast but Arnab Goswami’s talk show where he calls his guests but does not give them a chance to speak.
She writes, “The jokes about dark skin offend us because deep down, some of us idiotically think that having dark skin is a shortcoming. Would we be as offended if jokes were made about having fair skin like, ‘You are so fair that you were thrown out of Nirma washing powder commercial for being whiter than the washed shirt.’?”
Twinkle Khanna’s take on AIB roast comes as breath of fresh air. Where most of the Bollywood’s senior actors are been busy getting offended by AIB roast, this column has actually raised more important issues of free speech that is unfolding in this country at the present moment. Khanna has been very sensible in calling a spade, a spade, whereas actors like Aamir Khan only chose to reflect on the misplaced concerns about Indian culture, omitting the more serious concerns that inflict India in these times.
Khanna is not happy with the way the roast has been bashed. She makes her displeasure quite evident as she says that those “actors and religious groups which have had time to rain onslaughts on such trivial comical stints actually prove how jobless they are and how shallow their concerns are.”
Finally she writes, “Yes, I wish the AIB had made astute, layered gags and jibes but to be so offended as to lynch them over a bunch of wisecracks.”
Twinkle Khanna’s article has been lauded by many Bollywood celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, her husband Akshay Kumar, Arjun Kapoor and many more. She, sure, has talked out loud, and how!
