We see them act in movies, judging reality shows, attending dos, and so on. Bollywood stars are literally all over the place. We, the masses, have vested immense power and faith in these celebrities, but do they in turn, inspire us?
Well, there is a segment of the Bollywood population, actors, directors, etc, who have indeed done a great job as actors, but there is much more to be proud of. That is what makes them inspirational. Here is a look at some of the most inspiring Bollywood personalities:
While talking about Bollywood personalities who inspire people, it is impossible to not mention Mr. Shahrukh Khan. His is the perfect Bollywood story of success – from being from a non-filmy family to making it stupendously big in the industry. Not only a successful actor, Khan is one of the most successful and forward looking film producers in Bollywood. He has introduced the film industry to animation and technology through the special effects branch of his production house, Red Chilies Entertainment. But the film industry is not where his success ends. As the owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders team of the IPL, he made the largest profits among IPL teams, through ad sales and franchises. That is brand SRK, or King Khan for you!
She has proven her mettle not just as an actor, but as a human being as well. Unlike her contemporaries, she has chosen to talk and work on various socially relevant topics – talking about AIDS, female feticide, environment degradation, cleaning Mumbai streets with a broom, and so on. The ambassador of the Godfrey Philips Bravery Awards, she exhibited great courage while standing up against the underworld in 2002, for which she was awarded the same award (The Red and White Bravery Award). She was recently a member of a panel headed by Renuka Choudhury to suggest measures to be taken towards the upliftment of women in the government Budget for the current fiscal. She also co-owns the Kings XI of Punjab IPL team, where she made her presence amply visible.
In his ten years in the industry, he has changed the way people in India perceive filmmakers. Not just a filmmaker, he also went out there as a talk show host and a fashion designer. Even the fact that he is one of the most popular Indian filmmakers in the world is irrelevant. What is inspiring is that he has established an empire which has taken other filmmakers like Yash Chopra, decades to create, in just ten years.
Whenever she comes on screen, she seems a great deal more fresh than ever before, and forces you to take note of her exuberance. One of the best actors Bollywood has ever had, Kajol is an inspiration for many, not just because of her on screen energy, but more so because of her clear-cut priorities. She decided to get married in 1999, at the pinnacle of her career, and had a daughter soon afterwards. Filmmakers as huge as Karan Johar, Yash Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, and the likes are literally begging her to sign their films, but she has set motherhood as her top priority, and makes no bones about that.
Now, here is the first person on this list who does not fulfill the clichéd definition of a ‘star’. Rahul Bose has proved his acting abilities time and again in films like Mr & Mrs. Aiyar, Pyaar ke Side Effects, Jhankar Beats, English August, and so on. What brings him on this list is his contribution to the society – he has been working extensively with various NGOs and charitable bodies for AIDS awareness, Cancer, Old Age Homes, orphanages and so on. Apart from this, he also plays for the Indian Rugby team
For years, she has made the biggest names of Bollywood dance to her tunes – literally. But what makes her an inspiration is that she is the only woman director in the history of Bollywood who has stepped out of the ‘abla nari formula’ of filmmaking and has ventured into a field hitherto reserved for the men. But why do we even need to mention that she is a ‘woman-filmmaker’? In fact, that does her and her work a great deal of injustice considering she is in the same league as any of her fellow male filmmakers.
It is quite unfortunate that she has not really had the most successful Bollywood career despite her acting prowess displayed in some of her movies. But Dutta has just entered the ‘big league’ of the film industry, so the future for her is definitely bright. However, that is not why she is an inspiration for the youngsters. More than her acting prowess, or her fashion statement, it is her intelligence and elegance that stand out. An Economics graduate who won the Miss Universe title in 2000, she holds the record for the highest marks in the ‘final question’ round in the history of the pageant. She is the perfect ambassador – a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations and the brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton.
Whenever one talks of innovation in Bollywood, Farhan Akhtar’s contribution will be well remembered. His first film, Dil Chahta Hai is, in many ways, a landmark movie in Hindi cinema. It was the first to use the sound-sync technology. It was also a cult film for introducing Bollywood to fashion and for forcing actors to innovate with their hairstyles and look. It truly paved way for the cool, urbane multiplex films.
To even explain why she is on this list would be demeaning considering her achievements and contributions to society. All one can say is that Shabana Azmi despite not being a part of the current generation of actors continues to inspire the youth of the country, and perhaps even the world.
He is a person who sticks to his job of acting or filmmaking – nothing more, nothing less. He’s an inspiration for people who place their work before anything else, and works well as that.
