Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara – Review

Three men who complete each other- Hrithik Roshan (Arjun), Farhan Akhtar (Imran) and Abhay Deol (Kabir) are three school friends who have a promise to keep- to choose an adventure of their choice and be a part of those chosen by the other two. This finally happens to be Abhay’s bachelor’s, who recently got engaged to (Natasha) Kalki Koechlin.

So off they go to Spain, where they sort out their past glitches, play silly word games, make jokes about their teachers, hum the Doordarshan song together, perform the diamond biscuit parody and play pranks on random people. It is a movie where you see three adults behaving like children when they fight for a girl from their past, and later their coming of age when they support each other in combating their fears and providing emotional support during tough times.

The road trip of Spain is a treat to watch, as the three musketeers dive into the deep sea with the help of their diving instructor, (Laila) – Katrina Kaif and later sky dive, and enjoy in the Tomatino festival. The three adventures prove to be life changing for them- as every time they face their fears and get over them.
The timing of the actors, their singing of songs here and there, trying their luck with the girls and imitating each other takes you back to your own school days.

The easy going storyline with Javed Akhtar’s poems hummed by his son takes you to a magical land which brings a smile on your face. Zoya Akhtar has grown as a director from her first to this movie. The cinematography of Carlos Catalan is stupendous as he gives a breath-taking view of Spain. If the editing would have been better, the movie could have left a better impression on the audience. The abruptness in the sequence of scenes occasionally seen confuses you. The music by Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy is also not up to the mark, apart from Senorita.

The performances by the actors needs separate mention. Farhan is at his best and when he is at his best, no other actor can match up to him. Though Abhay and Hrithik are also brilliant, but when they three are together, Farhan’s performance stands apart. Katrina has a tailor made role, which she has been doing for years, so nothing different from her. Kalki plays the role of a spoilt brat perfectly. The veteran actors also leave no blank space to impress the audience. The performances are so natural that for some time you forget that you are watching a movie. It feels like you are taking a closer look into the lives of three amigos you have known always.

In a nutshell, it is a movie, which succeeds in maintaining a smile on your face throughout, smiles, which often gets converted into loud laughs and teach you a lesson of living your life to the fullest. It inspires you to take challenges in your life and gives you the strength to combat your fears as it teaches the lesson that there is no second chance in life. Even the title says – Zindagi Na MilegiDobara.
